What is a BMD Scan ?

BMD or bone densitometry scan refers to a test that measures your bone mineral density. A DEXA BMD scanner is a machine that scans (like taking a picture) your bones and tissues and calculates your bone mineral density.

DEXA BMD is sensitive test that can confirm the decrease of bone mass in a particular bone in any area of the body. It makes it possible to detect osteoporosis earlier and more accurately than any other method.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is the excessive loss of calcium from the bones, progressing without symptoms but weakening to the point that even simple everyday activities can cause painful, debilitating fractrures.

It was often thought of as an old women's ailment but we know that this bone robber can strike young women and even men without warning. This is because osteoporosis is a silent disease; you cannot feel bone loss or your bones becoming weaker. Often the first sign of the disease is a fracture.

Who is at Risk ?

Although we all experience some bone loss as we age, not everyone develops osteoporosis or experiences fractures. Bone mass typically begins declining in both men and women when they are in their mid 30s. However, certain people are more likely to develop osteoporosis than others. Factors that increase likelihood of developing osteoporosis are called “risk factors”.
